Tornado Outbreak of May 3, 2019
The 2019 Sand Springs, Oklahoma Tornado was a massively large and violent EF5-rated tornado that struck the city of Sand Springs, Oklahoma. After killing 76, another 324 were injured, along with $3.16 billion (2019 USD).

On the morning of May 3, a violent tornado outbreak was evident after a low pressure system with a strong jet stream was in motion for violent tornadoes. Dozens of tornadoes would touch down over a span of a few hours on May 3.

After a supercell formed around 3:30 PM CDT, multiple weak tornadoes touched down before the catastrophic EF5 touched down at 4:39 PM CDT. After tracking for 3 miles, the twister began to gradually strengthen. A barn was struck at EF2 strength, cause severe damage to the building.

Continuing to strengthen, the first 4 fatalities occurred in a mobile home that was completely swept away at high-end EF3 strength. By 5:26 PM CDT, the tornado reached peak strength south of Sand Springs. Due to the size of the tornado and the wind speeds, which reached 285 mph (458 km/h), a tornado emergency was declared for Sand Springs and surrounding areas. Multiple farms vanished as the EF5 completely swept away all buildings, killing 11 in the process. Severe ground scouring also occurred in this area.

Beginning to weaken but staying at EF5 strength, the tornado killed 36 in a neighborhood of well built home. Most of the neighborhood was completely destroyed with some homes only getting struck by the outer bands of the tornado. Another 5 were killed after another house was completely swept away at 6:09 PM CDT.

Continuing to weaken into a high-end EF4 17 more people were killed when a grocery store was leveled. Ground scouring continued to occur even as the tornado was weak. At a low-end EF3 intensity, the last 3 fatalities occurred at yet another mobile home as the tornado completely leveled the home.

Aftermath

Because of many violent and destructive tornadoes, governor Kevin Stitt declared a state of emergency and requested to President Trump for federal aid which he approved of the following day. After killing 76, injuring 324, and causing over $3.16 billion in damage, the Sand Springs EF5 cemented itself as one of the most destructive tornadoes in Oklahoma state history.
