The April 16th tornado outbreak was a localized but significant tornado outbreak. Over the course of 5 hours and 47 minutes 43 tornadoes touched down. The strongest of these was an EF4 that devastated Smithfield and Selma, NC, killing 67 people and injuring over two hundred. It was the deadliest single tornado since the March 3rd 2019 Lee county tornado. Several other strong tornadoes touched down on the evening of April 16th.

reported around 12:50PM. At 12:55PM a Tornado Emergency was declared for the city of Rock hill, SC. As the tornado entered Rock Hill it began to destroy homes, pick up cars and displace them, and several powerpoles were snapped. |

of New London causing minor shingle damage. As the tornado moved north of New London it started producing Mid-end EF2 damage. After moving out of New London the tornado struck Whitney injuring 2 people. The tornado soon later crossed Badin Lake, then soon lifting. |

Asheboro, shortly after it struck the Asheville Regional Airport doing EF3 damage and killing 7. As the tornado entered Asheboro it began to do catastrophic damage consisting of houses swept, trees debarked, and cars mangled. Once a debris ball was evident on radar a TorE was issued. While in the city limits it would kill 41 people. The tornado would follow highway 49 and soon strike Ramseur and kill 1 person. This tornado would later lift. |
