The April 16th tornado outbreak was a localized but significant tornado outbreak. Over the course of 5 hours and 47 minutes 43 tornadoes touched down. The strongest of these was an EF4 that devastated Smithfield and Selma, NC, killing 67 people and injuring over two hundred. It was the deadliest single tornado since the March 3rd 2019 Lee county tornado. Several other strong tornadoes touched down on the evening of April 16th.

EF1 Fisher town, NC 11:30AM 143 Yards Very little damage was reported with this tornado.
EF0 Kannapolis, NC 11:36AM 10 Yards Damage was confined to uprooted trees.
EF0 Gaffney, SC 11:58AM 46 Yards No damage was reported.
EF1 Rockwell, NC 12:01PM 90 Yards Trees snapped, shingles blew off, and downed

powerlines were evident across its path.

EF2 Harrisburg, NC 12:17PM 230 Yards 4 Deaths - Initially a weak tornado touched down

outside of Harrisburg, NC causing minor damage to

UNCC. After crossing 485 the tornado rapidly

Intensified causing major roof damage to the Wexford

Apartments. After doing major damage to the outskirts

It would weaken and then dissipate near downtown

Harrisburg.

EF0 Concord, NC 12:28PM 100 Yards The supercell that caused major damage to Harrisburg, NC

would recycle and drop a rather large EF0 that caused

minor roof damage to the far southern side of Concord.

EF1 Denton, NC 12:43PM 55 Yards Minor damage was reported.
EF2 Rock Hill, SC 12:47PM 880 Yards A strong tornado lofting debris heading for Rock hill was

reported around 12:50PM. At 12:55PM a Tornado Emergency

was declared for the city of Rock hill, SC. As the tornado entered

Rock Hill it began to destroy homes, pick up cars and displace

them, and several powerpoles were snapped.

EF2 New London, NC 1:21PM 700 Yards Initially a small weak needle tornado touched down outside

of New London causing minor shingle damage. As the

tornado moved north of New London it started

producing Mid-end EF2 damage. After moving out of New

London the tornado struck Whitney injuring 2 people.

The tornado soon later crossed Badin Lake, then soon

lifting.

EF4 Asheboro, NC 1:30PM 1760 Yards 49 Deaths - A large tornado touched down outside of

Asheboro, shortly after it struck the Asheville Regional

Airport doing EF3 damage and killing 7. As the tornado

entered Asheboro it began to do catastrophic damage

consisting of houses swept, trees debarked, and cars

mangled. Once a debris ball was evident on

radar a TorE was issued.

While in the city limits it would kill 41 people.

The tornado would follow highway 49 and soon strike

Ramseur and kill 1 person. This tornado would later lift.

EF0 Waxhaw, NC 1:31PM 80 Yards Minor damage was reported.
