Between January 26 and 28, a historic winter tornado outbreak took place across much of the Southern United States as well as parts of the Midwest. With 248 confirmed tornadoes and 1,102 tornadic fatalities, the outbreak ranks as one of the largest and one of the worst in United States history. More than two dozen tornadoes were confirmed each day of the event, with 57 on January 26, 165 on January 27, and 26 on January 28. In terms of violent tornadoes, the event ranks third with 29 EF4/5 storms, behind the 2018 Super Outbreak, the October 2018 India-Bangladesh Tornado Outbreak, the 2019 Super Outbreak, and the 1974 Super Outbreak.

A large outbreak was possible for January 26–28 as the SPC issued a moderate risk of severe weather for three consecutive days, centered over Arkansas through Tennessee. By the late-afternoon hours of January 26, several tornadoes had been reported across a few states, including several which caused significant damage in Texas, which were both rated EF4. At 3:25 pm CST (2025 UTC), the SPC issued a PDS tornado watch for much of Arkansas and parts of Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana. Tornadoes were scattered that day until early evening, when an intense tornadic cell tracked near the Brownsboro, Texas and a tornado emergency was declared for Brownsboro. A 0.25-mile (0.40 km) wide EF3 tornado then caused extensive damage in Brownsboro, however, no one was killed or injured.

Over 160 tornadoes were reported during the SPC's reporting day of 1200Z January 27 (7:00 am CDT) to 1200Z January 28 (7:00 am CDT). 1,102 tornadic deaths were confirmed as a result of the outbreak, with as many as 332 in Alabama alone. Aftermath of the EF5 tornado that struck Denver, Colorado.

The confirmed death toll stood at a record ~359,022 across 22 states with ~270,187 deaths in Colorado alone. Death tolls also stood at ~85,415 in Massachusetts, 803 in New York, 641 in Georgia, 442 in Nebraska, 312 in Alabama, 306 in Mississippi, 190 in Wyoming, 169 in Louisiana, 113 in Texas, 94 in Florida, 94 in North Carolina, 81 in South Carolina, 77 in Arkansas, 36 in Kansas, 33 in Kentucky, 12 in Virginia, 7 in Tennessee, 6 in Oklahoma, 2 in Missouri, 1 in Connecticut, and 1 in Vermont. These states include Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Hampshire, Maine, and the District of Columbia.

The damage estimates from the outbreak were $276 billion, which is a record for any tornado outbreak. Most of the damage costs from the outbreak came from the Colorado and the Massachusetts tornadoes in the outbreak. The Denver and Boston EF5s accounted for $168 billion of the damage alone.

By the end of the outbreak, numerous governors asked for federal relief from the tornadoes. These include the governors of Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, New York, and Massachusetts. President Donald J. Trump granted all of these states relief, and also granted additional relief to Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, and Texas due to the noted impacts of the storms in these states.

The National Weather Service did not finalize all of the reports of storm damage until August 21 due to the large number of reports. A total of 1,615 tornadoes were reported, however 1,617 tornadoes were confirmed. There were a total number of 7,292 storm reports from the outbreak, ranging from flash flooding to hail to straight-line winds. In addition, there were 535 indirect deaths from the outbreak. 100 mph straight-line winds caused a massive pileup on Interstate 10 in New Orleans, where 42 people were killed. Colorado had 97 indirect deaths from the outbreak, with most deaths coming from flash flooding, car accidents, or freak accidents during clean up efforts in the state.

Despite the wide range damage from the outbreak, all areas affected by the outbreak were completely rebuilt by September 1, showing the quick response from the federal government to help the affected states.
