Between May 1st and May 4th, a historic outbreak occurred all over the United States, causing a record confirmed 782 tornadoes. All states recorded tornadoes, even Hawaii and Alaska. A record of 93 confirmed EF4/EF5 tornadoes touched down, most of them in Tornado Alley. The first tornado was an EF3 in Tulsa, OK and the last tornado was an EF5 in Xenia, OH.
A large outbreak was possible for May 1–4 as the SPC issued a moderate risk of severe weather for four consecutive days, centered over Tornado and Dixie Allies. By the late-evening hours of May 1, several tornadoes had been reported across a few states, including multiple which caused significant damage in Oklahoma and Nebraska. At 3:25 pm CST (2025 UTC), the SPC issued a PDStornado watch for much of Oklahoma and parts of Missouri, Nebraska, Texas and Kansas. Tornadoes were scattered that day until early evening, when a huge, intense tornadic cell tracked near the areas of Kansas, Nebraska, and the Oklahoma City metropolitan area and a tornado emergency was declared for Stanton-Pilger Nebraska. A 1.5 mile (2.4 km) wide EF5 tornado then caused catastrophic damage in Moore. At least 29 people are known to have died in the city with 1,205 more injured.
Road surface stripped by multiples EF5 tornadoes around Chapman, Kansas. The 3rd EF5 killed an incredible 694 people.
On May 2, a large tornado struck suburbs of Orlando, Florida killing a record 16,763 people. The Orlando mayor called the damage "catastrophic." A day later, an EF5 rated tornado hit the northern suburbs of Houston, Texas, shortly thereafter, killing over 4,000 people. Television reporters in Houston, filming the tornado, reported that even from miles away, the funnel was so wide that they could not zoom their cameras out far enough to get the entire funnel into the frame at once. Over 340 tornadoes were reported during the SPC's reporting day of May 2 (12:00 am EST) to May 3 (12:00 am EST). 27,760 tornadic deaths were confirmed as a result of the outbreak, with as many as 16,763 in Florida alone. The overall death toll also includes 4,147 deaths in Texas, 1,534 in Oklahoma, 708 in Kansas, 232 in Ohio, 43 in Idaho, 23 in Nebraska, 19 in Colorado, 11 in Alabama, 10 in Indiana, 4 in South Dakota, 3 in Missouri, and 2 in Tennessee according to state officials.
On May 5, President Donald Trump approved multiple Governor's request's for emergency federal assistance including search and rescue support.
On May 6, 2018, the National Weather Service sent out people to survey the damage; however, with the large number of tornadoes across Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas, the reports were not finalized for months. By May 7, the death toll from the event (including death tolls from flooding and other severe weather) stood at more than 27,830 people across 13 states. The outbreak caused over $129 billion in damages.
The outbreak is still the costliest and deadliest tornado outbreak in US history.
