A massive tornado formed around 25 miles from Topeka, KS, at 11:15 PM CDT. This tornado is only seen because of lightning at the very corners of the picture. The twister was over open fields for most of its life in Kiowa County, until it hit a small part of Greensburg at 11:50 PM, as four homes were destroyed, 13 damaged, as the twister then changed direction. The twister lasted throughout the first half-hour of 21 February, and it then hit Topeka. That was just 5 minutes before it died, but the twister relentlessly slammed into multiple subdivisions, destroyed at least 750 homes, left >2,500 damaged, and killed six people in the subdivisions alone. A brand-new Silverado was thrown around 150 feet and totaled, and the front passenger was killed. It died just before hitting a college campus.
