This page documents the tornadoes and tornado outbreaks of 2016. Extremely destructive tornadoes form most frequently in the U.S., Bangladesh and eastern India, but they can occur almost anywhere under the right conditions. Tornadoes also appear regularly in neighbouring southern Canada during the Northern Hemisphere's summer season, and somewhat regularly in Europe, Asia, Argentina, and Australia.

January

70 tornadoes were reported in the United States in January, of which 63 were confirmed.

January 4-6

An additional 265 people died as a result of the winter storm


A violent outbreak of tornadoes was the result of a record-breaking winter storm. Tornadoes were caused in Alabama, Georgia, and Most notably Florida. An EF3 tornado killed 46 people, and an EF2 killed 16.

4 people were killed and ten others were injured by an EF2 tornado in Miami Florida. Another person was killed by an EF2 in Key West.

An outbreak of tornadoes struck dixie ally, a total of 22 tornadoes caused 21 injuries. An EF2 struck Northport in Tuscaloosa County, AL. Injuring 10 people. Another EF2 hit Mobile.

January 29

Numerous tornadoes touched down in the central plains, including an EF2 in Red Rock.

February

110 Tornadoes were reported in the United States in February, however, 119 were confirmed.

February 2–3

Numerous tornadoes touched down in Nebraska and Iowa, including an EF3 that killed 6 people and injured 20 others.

February 9-15

A very large and historic outbreak took place over mid-February. A total of tornadoes touched down. An extremely rare February High-risk was issued on February 12. Several tornadoes touched down, Including a very violent high-end EF4 in Springfield, Tennessee that killed 61 people and injured 1,102 others.

A small outbreak of tornadoes impacted parts of the deep south, no one died or was injured and the most significant damage was EF1 to homes and trees near the community of Sapps in Alabama.

March

105 tornadoes were reported and confirmed in the United States in March.

March 1-4

A moderate outbreak of 66 tornadoes impacted the Ohio Valley. The worst of which was an EF3 in Middletown.

March 22-23

34 tornadoes touched down in Florida and Georgia, Causing 18 deaths and 48 injuries. Two more tornadoes touched down in Alabama. And 3 more in South Carolina.

April

84 tornadoes were reported in the United States in April, of which only 72 were confirmed, this is near record low for April.

April 4

7 tornadoes touched down on April 4, all were weak, however, an EF1 caused minor tree damage and damage to homes and businesses in and around Paducah.

May

A large outbreak occurred over parts of northern Africa and extreme southern Europe, causing a total of 1,064 deaths, most of which was the result of an F4 tornado in Catania.

May 19-31

A very large outbreak sequence produced 190 tornadoes over the course of 12 days, two EF4s touched down, one in Oklahoma and the other in Iowa.

June

June 11

An EF4 tornado struck Arco in Idaho. It is the strongest tornado to have ever hit the state.

A moderate outbreak of mostly weak tornadoes impacted the Ohio Valley region beginning on the evening of June 16, and continuing into the early morning hours of June 17. 53 tornadoes touched down, including an EF3 in the northern Suburbs of Middletown.

July

A total of 324 tornadoes were reported in the United States in July, of which 309 were confirmed. This set a new monthly record for July.
